Have you ever found a pair that just refused to burn, maybe they got all ash over them from the fire etc but when taken out and cleaned were essentially undamaged. Just wondering or have they all eventually turned to dust?

I remember a cobbler nearby started a fire to get rid of a bunch of old shoes which have not been repaired or not taken by the customer after repair together with some leather residuals from his workshop.
The fire was in full flow but stopped by a sudden and heavy rainfall. Later I came along the firepit still smoldering and found some of the shoes half burnt and destorted by the flames but a few survived the inferno more or less charcoled but still recognisable or even unharmed. I dugg around in the firepit and got a pair of low heel full leather sandals out of the remains that were a little charred but still usable. The shoes stunk from ashes and burnt leather and made black stains on my feet but I managed to walk in them and the shoes did not fall apart. As a child I had no idea how to hide the sandals without fear and so I put them back into the firepit that was ignited again after a week and so all shoes had to suffer from fire again.

Once upon a time, I threw away many different shoes, rubber, leather and sneakers. When the fire died down, I stirred the ashes and saw that only the shafts of some of the rubber boots were charred, the soles of the leather boots remained, and one pair of sneakers was completely undamaged. They had to be filled with flammable liquid and ignited again.

Everytime I have burnt rubber boots, senakers, leather boots and so on, eventually the fire won! I tend to make sure that fireplace is warm enough to the very end.
Most difficult boots were Pink Sorels, with little help they burned completely as well.
